A special cat tale

I just had an inspiring and memorable experience that needs to be shared.  In a moment, I’ll tell you a short but special cat tale with a message for every single person that chooses to pay attention today.

First a few words of thanks

Wrapping up a joyous 15 year E2-Versary month of celebration at Espresso Elevado, yesterday I drove to Ferndale Cat Shelter to deliver our fundraising check.  It was the result of our efforts the last week of March as we roasted and sold Cat Fiend Blend, donated a portion of net retail sales to the shelter, and took in cash donations from the community.

This year, our small shop raised $2,218 to help the cats of Metro Detroit!!  I’m so proud and thankful for our coffee community, and simply want to express gratitude. 🙏💛

Now on to the cat tale....

Fundraiser meets need

Bottle feeding a newborn kitten

As I arrived at the shelter, a bigger story emerged and I witnessed all of our efforts collide head-on with the shelter's very real needs.

Just moments before I arrived at the Catfe, an angel woman from the neighborhood had brought in an abandoned newborn kitten. She had found it in a little pile of leaves by her house where her dogs were sniffing -- its umbilical cord still attached!  Although she had never cared for an infant kitten, she warmed it up in soft blankets, got a little syringe on Instacart, and learned how to nurse it.

Together, they made it through the night and then this dear woman took a day off work to bring the kitty to Ferndale Cat Shelter where director Deanne got right to work caring for the precious little soul (pictured above).  Within minutes as we all watched, Deanne had bottle fed, prompted the kitten to go potty, and found a foster to continue care.

Bottle babies like this kitten, who are abandoned by their mothers for whatever reason, require round the clock feeding every 2 hours. They need to be kept warm, and they need to be stimulated to go the bathroom.  Deanne & the crew at FCS give cats the best chance to survive and thrive.  It was heartwarming to see.

THIS is what our donations are supporting. 😻🥰

A broader message

This little cat tale purrfectly shows that positive acts of kindness — both big and small — make the world a better place!  Don’t ever think because you are one person or just a small business, that you cannot contribute in a very meaningful way.

Sometimes when we are called to serve, we may not always feel ready.  Have the courage to do it anyway!! ✨  There may be a soul out there who really needs you right now.
